چکیده
18 Granule ripples at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve (GSDNPP) were observed with 19 inexpensive digital timelapse cameras over a 70-day period in winter 2010-2011. The ripples migrated 20 during a handful of discrete events visible ripple movement occurred on only 11 days during the 21 observation period. The movement conditions are documented with hourly and 15-minute records 22 from two nearby weather stations, and by a cup anemometers at the site itself. During the most 23 prominent movement episode when local winds averaged ~10m/s, ripples of several sizes were 24 observed simultaneously and a reciprocal relationship of ripple size and propagation speed was seen, 25 with small (~10cm) ripples moving at ~1.4 cm/min, and larger (~80cm) ripples at ~0.15 cm/min . Ripple 26 sizes and morphologies evolve throughout the observation. 27

The sand dunes migration patterns in Mesr Erg region using satellite imagery analysis and wind data
Understanding the situation, behavior and the nature of sand dunes and also their location, transport and deposition are very important. On the other hand, the importance of sand dunes is due to the impacts that they have on water and soil resources, flora and fauna and human infrastructure. This study, looks at the development patterns of sand dunes in Mesr erg region. In the first part, data ...
متن کاملObservations of Aeolian Ripple migration on an Egyptian Seif Dune using an Inexpensive Digital Timelapse Camera
I report experiments on the observation of sand ripples on the Quattani dunes in Egypt using an inexpensive ($150) digital timelapse camera. Simple ripples in the fine sand had a wavelength of 10cm and propagated downwind (windspeed ~10m/s) at a speed of ~3cm/minute, and Y-junction defects moved one wavelength forward in the propagating ripple pattern over ~6 minutes. This defect propagation sp...
متن کاملLarge Aeolian Ripples: Extrapolations from Earth to Mars
Introduction: The shapes produced on terrestrial surfaces that are continually subject to aeolian processes range in size from tiny ripples to giant draa [1]. The physical mechanism of the formation of ripples, the smallest of aeolian bedforms, is intimately related to saltation and reptation processes. Sand and granule ripples are typically tens of reptation path lengths wide and do not alter ...
متن کاملThe rate of granule ripple movement on Earth and Mars
The rate of movement for 3and 10-cm-high granule ripples was documented in September of 2006 at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve during a particularly strong wind event. Impact creep induced by saltating sand caused 24 granules min 1 to cross each cm of crest length during wind that averaged 9 m s 1 (at a height well above 1 m), which is substantially larger than the threshold for sa...
متن کاملInvestigating the interaction between rivers and sand dunes in arid and semi-arid regions of Iran
Extended abstract 1- Introduction Fluvial and aeolian processes are important factors in changing the surface of morphology in the Earth. When rivers and sand dunes meet, the transportation of sediment between them can lead to one of the systems or both of them change. With their connection between river sediment and wind systems there would be lots of reactions, but very little has been st...
